For those of us in the U.S., it’s easy to assume that innovation mostly happens here. While that may have been true for decades, the reality has changed. Today, groundbreaking software can emerge from anywhere in the world — and super apps are a perfect example.
If you’re not familiar with the concept of super apps, I wrote a primer: What is a Super App?
In this article, we’ll explore real-world examples of super apps that are already transforming daily life in Asia, Latin America, and beyond.

1. WeChat (China)
Let’s dive into real-world examples, starting with WeChat.
A simplified summary of how a super app works might go like this: a user books a doctor’s appointment, pays their medical bills, messages the doctor, and checks lab results — all without leaving the app.
At first glance, you might think, “Isn’t that just a medical app?” Not quite. In reality, these are a series of mini apps bundled inside the WeChat ecosystem. And beyond healthcare, the platform offers a wide range of services:
- Messaging
- Payments and Wallets (like PayPal or Venmo)
- Shopping (like Amazon)
- Rides and Transport (like Uber)
- Social Feed (like Facebook)
- Mini Programs (third-party apps built into WeChat)
To be technically accurate, the version available internationally is called WeChat, while the Chinese domestic version is known as Weixin.
Weixin is a much richer platform, offering deep integrations for mobile and web-based third-party mini apps — allowing developers to build powerful, localized experiences right inside the app.
How do you know which version you’re using?
You’ll be automatically routed to Weixin if:
- Your region is set to mainland China
- You’re using a Chinese phone number
- You have a Chinese SIM card
- You’re trying to access Weixin Pay or local services
For simplicity, we’ll use “WeChat” to refer to the entire ecosystem from here on.
According to Asia Times , in some Chinese hospitals, over 50% of medical payments are made via WeChat — and it’s considered as good as cash. Municipal governments actively partner with WeChat, fully integrating official services and data into users’ phones.
What started as a messaging app is now driving medical payments, appointments, and insurance claims — all handled within the app in several provinces.
Take HKSH Medical Group (Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital) as an example.
They offer appointment booking and payment through WeChat, with one goal in mind: maximum convenience for patients.
In contrast, imagine how much effort it takes in the U.S. to coordinate healthcare services, billing, and HIPAA compliance — often across fragmented systems. With a super app model, much of that could be streamlined into one unified user interface, powered by shared APIs and mini apps.

This screenshot from Weixin (WeChat China) shows the app’s integrated medical services, allowing users to access a wide range of healthcare departments — including oncology, radiotherapy, gynecology, pediatrics, and even assisted reproduction — all from a single interface. Users can book appointments, receive vaccinations, schedule health checkups, and more without leaving the app, demonstrating how Weixin functions as a true super app in everyday life.
2. Grab (Singapore)
Imagine you’re in Singapore on a typical weekday.
Your morning starts with a delicious breakfast from your favorite hawker stall, ordered through GrabFood. While eating, you open your GrabPay wallet to split last night’s dinner bill with friends — quick and seamless.
Next, you book a GrabCar to get to your morning meeting (similar to Uber). In just about three minutes, the car is waiting outside.
On the way, you realize you’re low on mobile data, so you top up your prepaid plan directly through the app. You also take a moment to pay your utility bill — all within Grab, with just a few taps.
After your meeting wraps up, you browse GrabMart for groceries and schedule an evening delivery.
Throughout the day, you’re collecting GrabRewards points for each transaction. Later in the afternoon, you invest a few dollars using AutoInvest, Grab’s built-in micro-investment feature — turning everyday spending into long-term savings.

3. Tata Neu (India)
You wake up and open the Tata Neu app to shop for groceries through BigBasket, India’s leading online grocery platform — all seamlessly integrated within the app.
Later that morning, you pay your electric bill using NeuCoins, a unified rewards currency earned across Tata’s digital services.
At lunch, you book a flight on Air India for an upcoming trip — again, without ever leaving the app.
While browsing, you explore deals on Tata CLiQ and place an order for new clothing in just a few clicks.
In the afternoon, you get a notification about your car insurance renewal. You renew your Tata AIG policy directly within Tata Neu in under a minute.
To wind down, you stream your favorite content on Tata Play, using more of the rewards you earned throughout the day.

4. Gojek (Indonesia and Southeast Asia)
Gojek offers a wide range of services under one roof — including GoRide, GoCar, GoFood, GoPay, GoMed, GoShop, GoBills, and more.
You wake up late for work, so instead of walking, you quickly open Gojek and book a GoRide (motorbike taxi). It arrives in just 2 minutes and navigates through traffic with ease.
On the way, you remember you forgot to pay your electricity bill — no problem. You open GoPay and handle the payment instantly, all within the app.
After your meeting, you’re feeling hungry. You open GoFood, browse local warungs (street food vendors), and order nasi goreng from your favorite spot. Your food is delivered in under 25 minutes, complete with real-time tracking.
Later, your coworker needs to send a USB drive across town. Instead of calling a courier, you book a GoSend delivery. A driver picks it up in 15 minutes and delivers it safely.
As the day winds down, you stop by a local café that accepts GoPay. You scan the QR code, pay without cash, and earn GoPay Coins — loyalty rewards that you can redeem later.
Before bed, you check out a promo on GoShop, buy a discounted phone case, and schedule it for next-day delivery.

You start your day with breakfast from a roadside vendor and pay by scanning their Paytm QR code — no cash, no card, just a quick tap and scan.
Later, you realize your metro card balance is low. No problem — you recharge it instantly using Paytm’s Metro Smart Card feature.
While commuting, you browse Paytm Mall and grab a deal on a new pair of earphones, paying directly with your Paytm Wallet balance.
At lunch, you book a weekend flight on Air India — comparing prices, earning reward points, and completing the booking, all within the app.
Later in the day, your mobile data plan is about to expire. You recharge your number in under 15 seconds using UPIthrough Paytm.
That evening, you check on your mutual fund investments in the Paytm Money section, tracking your SIPs and financial goals.
Dinner with friends? Easy. You split the bill, and your friends send you their share instantly via Paytm Wallet or UPI.

6. LINE (Japan, Taiwan, Thailand)
Your day begins with a LINE notification — a reminder from your local city ward office about tomorrow’s recycling schedule, sent via an official government LINE Account.
As you sip your morning tea, you scroll through LINE NEWS, which curates top national headlines, tech stories, and anime updates — all in a clean, scrollable feed without needing a separate app.
Your daughter sends a good luck message from school in your LINE Family Chat, complete with a cute sticker and photo. You reply with a voice message and an animated “Good Luck” sticker — all within the same chat window.
At lunch, you’re organizing a local community event. You post a video invitation through LINE VOOM, then share the link with your friends in a group chat. Attendees can RSVP right inside LINE — no extra website, no event platform needed.
In the afternoon, you visit a government office to file some paperwork. When it’s time to pay your service fee, you scan a LINE Pay QR code and pay ¥300 instantly from your digital wallet — cashless, fast, and secure.
Later that evening, you relax by streaming a manga episode via LINE Manga, and play a few rounds of LINE POP2while chatting with friends in real time.

7. Rappi (Latin America)
It’s Friday evening in Bogotá, and you’re getting ready for a laid-back weekend.
You realize you’re out of coffee and snacks, so you open Rappi, head to RappiMart, and in under 10 minutes, a delivery of Colombian roast beans and chocolates arrives at your door via Rappi Turbo.
Just as you settle in, your friends invite you to a spontaneous game night. You use RappiFavor — a task-based service — to send a courier to pick up your board game from a friend across town and bring it to your apartment.
While you wait, you remember your fridge is empty for tomorrow’s brunch. No worries — you open RappiMall, order groceries from Éxito (a major Latin American grocery chain), and schedule the delivery for the next morning.
Game night runs long, and nobody wants to cook. You launch Rappi’s shared cart feature, where each friend adds their favorite meal from different restaurants — combined into one seamless group delivery.
One friend forgot their wallet? You send them money instantly via RappiPay, using only their phone number — no bank app needed.
Before heading to bed, you book a last-minute hotel in Medellín for your weekend getaway — right from within the same app.

Rappi Super app
As we’ve seen, super apps have emerged across the globe, answering the growing demand for simplicity and integration in daily life. These platforms aren’t just popular — they’re essential in regions where people rely on mobile phones from early teens to retirement age, and where urban density makes convenience a necessity.
One clear pattern stands out: the more crowded and fast-moving a place is, the greater the need for a unified app experience. Super apps thrive in highly populated or overpopulated cities, where efficiency isn’t just nice to have — it’s critical.
This insight maps directly to the top ten urban centers in the United States, including:
- New York (NY)
- Los Angeles (CA)
- Chicago (IL)
- San Francisco (CA)
- Houston (TX)
- Dallas (TX)
- Atlanta (GA)
- Miami (FL)
- Boston (MA)
- Seattle (WA)
These cities are natural environments for super apps — dense, digital-first, and filled with people juggling complex daily routines.
So here’s the question:
Wouldn’t it be amazing if we had similar all-in-one apps available on the Apple App Store and Google Play in the U.S.?
At Acenji, we’re exploring what it would take to bring super app simplicity to U.S. cities — by merging no-code, event-driven design with deeply integrated user experiences. Our mission is to make these global innovations local, accessible, and tailored to modern urban life.
Imagine opening one app in New York or L.A. that lets you pay bills, book appointments, hail a ride, split dinner, and schedule deliveries — all without switching screens. The tech exists. The need is real. Maybe it’s time the U.S. stopped watching — and started building and using.
